Bang Saray
A fishing village, not a resort strip
Bang Saray still works for a living. Boats go out before dawn and come back into the pier mid-morning, and most of what they land is on a table within a few hours. That is the whole reason to come here rather than twenty minutes up the road.
The bay is a working one. The sea is a hundred metres from the houses, and Bang Saray beach fifteen minutes on foot.
What to do
The fishing pier
Worth walking out first thing to watch the boats unload. The stalls at the landward end sell whatever came in that morning.
Seafood
A run of open-fronted restaurants along the seafront. Point at what you want, say how you want it cooked. Crab, prawns, squid and whole fish are the things to order.
Boats, fishing and the islands
Fishing trips, snorkelling, and runs out to the local islands, on a boat we work with. Ask us — we do the arranging. Everything is subject to availability, so the earlier you tell us the better.
Nong Nooch Garden
Fifteen minutes north. Large tropical botanical garden with a Thai cultural show — the standard half-day trip from here.
Pattaya
Twenty-five minutes up the coast when you want noise, shopping and nightlife — and twenty-five minutes back when you have had enough.

By car
About two hours from central Bangkok on Motorway 7. Free parking at every house.
From U-Tapao
Thirty minutes. From Suvarnabhumi, allow around ninety minutes.
